In this section, I will briefly cover the basics of Heart Disease and how it affects our Elderly and to create awareness amongst our Caregivers who take care of our Elderly.

HEART DISEASE is the term used to describe what happens when the heart’s blood supply is blocked or interrupted due to a build-up of fatty substances in the Coronary Arteries.

HEART DISEASE is also termed Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)

HEART DISEASE may lead to complex problems in the Elderly such as ANGINA, HEART ATTACK or HEART FAILURE and I will cover them briefly.

ANGINA:
Angina can be a mild onset of an uncomfortable feeling which is similar to indigestion. When the arteries that supply your heart muscle with blood and oxygen become narrowed, the blood supply to your heart muscle is restricted also referred to as CORONARY HEART DISEASE

Common Symptoms:
o Often brought on by physical activity, an emotional upset, cold weather or after a meal. The episodes usually subside after a few minutes.
o Chest pain or discomfort
o Pain in your arms, neck, jaw, shoulder or back accompanying chest pain
o Nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, sweating and dizziness

HEART ATTACK:
Medical term MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION – a serious medical emergency in which the supply of blood to the heart is suddenly blocked usually by a blood clot.
Lack of blood to the heart can seriously damage the heart muscle.

Common Symptoms:
o Chest PAIN- the chest may feel like it is being squeezed or compressed by a heavy object and the pain can radiate from the chest to the jaw, neck arms and back.
o Shortness of breath
o Feeling weak and or lightheaded
o Overwhelming feeling of anxiety

HEART FAILURE:
Heart Failure is a serious condition as the heart has difficulty pumping enough blood around the body. It usually occurs because the Heart Muscle has become weak or stiff to work effectively.

Common Symptoms:
o Breathlessness
o Feeling tired
o Swollen legs, ankles, and feet
