In this section I will briefly cover the basics that the Caregiver need to look out for should the Elderly have any symptoms of a STROKE.

The medical term for a STROKE is CEREBROVASCULAR ACCIDENT or CVA.
The main Symptoms of a STROKE can be remembered with the following word FAST:

Face – has the Elderly’s face fallen on one side? Can they smile?

Arms – can the Elderly raise both arms and keep them there?

Speech – is the Elderly’s speech slurred?

Time – time to call Emergency Service is any one of the above signs are detected.
Causes:

  • A stroke occurs when the blood supply to your brain is interrupted or reduced.
  • This deprives the brain of oxygen and nutrients, which can cause your brain cells to die.
  • A stroke may be caused by a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (haemorrhagic stroke)
stroke - common health problems in elderly

Common symptoms:

  • Trouble with speaking and understanding. The Elderly may experience confusion and their speech may be slurred and the Caregiver may have difficulty to understand the Elders words.
  • Paralysis or numbness of the face, arm or leg. Elderly may develop sudden numbness, weakness or paralysis in their face, arm or leg, especially on one side of their body.
  • One side of the Elders mouth may droop when they try to smile.
  • Trouble with seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Headache. A sudden, severe headache, which may be accompanied by vomiting, dizziness or altered consciousness, may indicate Elders is having a stroke.
  • Trouble with walking. Elderly may stumble or experience sudden dizziness, loss of balance or loss of coordination.
